Maria Simonsson
During the past few years, I have grown increasingly intrigued by vessels. I am exploring the many forms a vessel can assume and also, more importantly, how to expand a fiber technique that has not traditionally been associated with vessel making into a new dimension. Many people do not believe that my vessels are made of fabric until they touch them.

The vessels are made of wire and wire mesh covered with quilt batting and fabrics, which is then stitched, embroidered and appliquéd. The process of stitching itself is important to me both for its meditative quality and because it connects me to women's work through the centuries.

Very often, my vessels get their inspiration from nature, especially water. The colors evoke different moods, such as the cold blue ice in the “Iceboat” or the warm yellow sunshine in “June” . The pieces tie together through the technique used and through design elements that are repeated in each piece, such as the wire spirals and stitch patterns.
